What is backflow?
Backflow is the undesirable reversal of water flow and other contaminants from any location into the distribution pipes of your drinking water system.
What is a backflow assembly?
Backflow preventers are plumbing devices that are installed into the plumbing system to prevent contaminated water from flowing backward in the water system. A properly installed, tested and maintained backflow preventer can prevent the backflow of water from flowing back into the community water system, thus protecting your loved ones and community as a whole.
Am I required to have a backflow assembly?
Control of Cross-contamination through backflow prevention is required in most applications. Including irrigation water meters, multi-family housing, as well as all commercial and industrial properties are required to have backflow prevention assemblies.
What happens if I do not have my backflow tested?
The most important reason to have your backflow assembly tested is for your health and safety. Beyond that it depends on the water district supplying your property. If for some reason you do not test your backflow assembly you may be fined for non-compliance. Also, your water service may be suspended or terminated to protect the public water system.
Why do I need my "Backflow Prevention Assembly" tested annually?
As required by California State Law: Title 17, Article 2 section 7605, subsection c; Backflow preventers
shall be tested at least annually or more frequently if determined to be necessary by the health agency or
water supplier. By keeping in compliance with state law and having your backflow prevention assembly
tested annually, you will help to ensure that the drinking water supplied to your home remains safe. Also,
backflow prevention assemblies and devices break or wear out, just like the parts of a car, therefore
having it tested annually will ensure that it is working properly or in need of repairs.
At All Pro Backflow, Inc. we employ certified backflow assembly testers who have completed
rigorous training, and are certified to test your backflow prevention assembly. Please don't hesitate to
call us today!
What is a cross-connection?
A cross-connection is any temporary or permanent connection between a public water system and any source or system containing non-potable water or other substances.
What is an air gap?
An air gap is a vertical, physical separation between the end of a water supply outlet and the flood-level rim of a receiving vessel. This separation must be twice the diameter of the water supply outlet and never less than one inch.
Does my water get interrupted during one of these tests?
In order to properly service your backflow preventer, water service will need to be interrupted for five to ten minutes in most cases. Rarely, it will take a bit longer than this, but only if more serious issues are found.
Why does my water company require me to test my backflow preventer annually?
As required by California State Law: Title 17, Article 2 section 7605, subsection c; Backflow preventers
shall be tested at least annually or more frequently if determined to be necessary by the health agency or
water supplier.
Your water provider is required to supply you with drinkable water. Since you may use water for other
purposes other than drinking they have to comply by law and make sure that this connection is protected
and will not allow this undesirable water to flow backwards into their drinking water that they are
responsible for.
